Ukraine Reconstruction is an active pilot initiative in Lviv that combines industrial hemp cultivation with carbon removal and low carbon building materials for post conflict reconstruction. The project removes CO2 through fast growing biomass and long term carbon storage in bio based construction, while creating local jobs and a scalable model for climate positive rebuilding.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

This project empowers climate-vulnerable and underrepresented groups by embedding climate action directly into humanitarian reconstruction. In western Ukraine, hemp-based construction is used to deliver sustainable, healthy housing for internally displaced people and war-affected families, including orphans and caregivers, addressing urgent social needs alongside climate impact.

Hempcrete housing provides safe, non-toxic, energy-efficient buildings that are well suited to rapid reconstruction and long-term occupancy. By replacing high-emission materials with locally produced, bio-based alternatives, the project lowers costs while improving indoor air quality and thermal comfort for vulnerable populations who are often overlooked in climate solutions.

The initiative creates local employment and training opportunities in agriculture, materials production, and construction, prioritising displaced workers, women, and young people whose livelihoods have been disrupted by conflict. Industrial hemp cultivation and hempcrete construction are accessible, decentralised activities that enable participation by small landholders and community-scale enterprises rather than large industrial actors.

Within Tao Climate, inclusion is built into project governance through close collaboration with local partners who lead implementation on the ground. This ensures that climate-positive rebuilding directly benefits those most affected by both climate change and conflict, turning reconstruction into a pathway for long-term resilience and dignity.
