Project Summary / Description:
This project tackles the neglected issue of habitat loss at field margins during high-standard farmland conversion, or post the conventional whole-lethal herbicide-treatment. It focuses on planting selected, deeply-rooted vegetation that stabilizes soil, provides nectar/habitat for pest-controlling insects, and yields economic benefits (e.g., medicinal/herbal). This creates an "ecological-economic-aesthetic" engineering solution along field borders. The designed plant communities will form resilient, beautiful buffers that actively deliver multiple ecosystem services. These include enhancing carbon sequestration, naturally suppressing crop pests through conserved natural enemies, and increasing overall on-farm biodiversity, thereby supporting more sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural production.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project intentionally empowers women farmers and rural youth - groups often excluded from climate decision-making—by centering their economic agency and traditional knowledge in buffer strip design and management. In China, particularly in Hianan’s rural communities, women disproportionately manage marginal lands and herbal resources; our functional strips integrate medicinal plants (e.g., Chrysanthemum indicum) that align with women’s existing expertise, creating new income streams through harvestable crops without displacing staple agriculture. We partner with women-led farming cooperatives in Hainan to co-design plant selections, ensuring cultural relevance and equitable benefit-sharing. For youth, we collaborate with Zhejiang University’s agricultural extension programs to train young field technicians in buffer monitoring and carbon measurement—providing climate-skills pathways in rural areas. Crucially, 60% of our pilot field coordinators are women, and youth constitute 40% of our community training cohorts. By transforming neglected borders into productive assets, we directly address vulnerabilities: smallholders (70% women-headed in target regions) gain climate-resilient income amid herbicide-driven soil degradation. This model ensures underrepresented groups aren’t just beneficiaries but co-creators of scalable, regenerative solutions.
