How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Congo Rainforest Fund (CRF) empowers groups that are historically underrepresented in the climate movement by placing Indigenous Peoples, local communities, women, youth, and displaced populations at the center of climate action. CRF’s work is led and implemented by Congolese conservationists and practitioners with lived experience in conflict-affected and climate-vulnerable regions. CRF partners directly with forest-dependent and Indigenous communities to co-design conservation strategies, recognizing them as long-term stewards of carbon-rich forests rather than beneficiaries alone. Women are actively engaged through leadership roles within CRF and through community-based conservation, education, and livelihood initiatives that increase economic participation and decision-making power. CRF’s leadership includes a Congolese refugee and multiple women in senior finance, communications, and regional leadership roles, ensuring that perspectives from marginalized and frontline communities shape organizational strategy. Youth are engaged through conservation education, monitoring, and skills-building opportunities that prepare the next generation of environmental leaders. By grounding climate mitigation in local leadership, equity, and lived experience, CRF ensures climate solutions that are inclusive, durable, and responsive to those most impacted by environmental degradation.
