Project Summary / Description:

This is an active ARR carbon sink project that restores degraded land in the Estrella Fluvial Inírida Wetlands Complex in the Colombian Amazon through agroforestry with native species led by indigenous communities. The initiative captures atmospheric CO₂ and reduces the risk of deforestation by strengthening territorial governance and aligning local livelihoods with forest permanence.

The project has restored 235 hectares and established 94,000 trees that are continuously monitored using geospatial platforms. It is currently in the scaling-up phase towards the restoration of more than 900 hectares under an ARR carbon credit scheme in the process of Gold Standard certification, with the projection of generating verified long-term emission reductions. The model integrates indigenous governance, satellite monitoring and international carbon standards, offering a replicable climate solution for the Amazon and other tropical ecosystems.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The project directly empowers Amazonian indigenous communities, one of the groups historically underrepresented in the climate movement, recognising them as central actors in carbon sink management and not merely as beneficiaries. The indigenous communities of Cayulamo and Bachaco Buenavista lead decision-making on land use, species selection, planting schedules and management strategies, strengthening their autonomy and territorial governance.

The project promotes the active participation of indigenous women and youth in restoration, monitoring, and plant material production activities, generating technical skills, local employment, and community leadership in long-term climate solutions. The integration of agroforestry also allows for the diversification of livelihoods, reducing economic vulnerability to climate change.

At the organisational level, Saving the Amazon has a diverse and interdisciplinary team, with a high participation of women in technical, operational and project management leadership roles. This structure reflects the foundation's commitment to equity, inclusion and climate justice, integrating traditional knowledge and technical expertise to design culturally appropriate, scalable and environmentally sound climate solutions.
