AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) is a method of controlled irrigation where rice fields are allowed to dry before being watered again. This is a safe and effective approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions specifically methane.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

While agriculture is a primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, rural farmers in developing countries typically do not possess the knowledge or resources needed to actively mitigate emissions under normal circumstances. Moreover, because their primary focus is providing for themselves and their families, climate advocacy—while important—is often a distant secondary concern. Green Carbon bridges these two outlooks through its collaboration with local farmers to integrate AWD into conventional agricultural practices. On one hand, participation with JCM methodology ensures verifiable emissions reductions are achieved, while AWD’s positive additionalities (i.e., reduced seed, fertilizer, water, and other input costs; potential yield increase) tie closely with farmers’ priorities.
Additionally, our project makes conscious efforts to improve gender inclusivity at both a local and administrative level of project initiation. The Global Division responsible for AWD projects throughout South-East Asia is headed primarily by female staff, marking an important move toward inclusion in a space where women, especially in Japan, remain notably underrepresented in senior roles. This perspective allows for greater equality at the local level, with project design cultivated with project design cultivated with the needs, constraints, and opportunities of local women farmers in mind.
