Project Summary / Description:
This initiative targets the urgent need for sustainable and resilient energy solutions in regions facing chronic electricity shortages and environmental challenges. In Kyrgyzstan, the national power system is heavily dependent on hydropower, with the Toktogul reservoir supplying a significant portion of the country’s electricity. However, water levels in Toktogul have fallen to critically low levels, reducing generation capacity and increasing the risk of power deficits, especially during peak winter demand. The energy shortage disproportionately affects remote and mountainous regions, which already struggle with limited grid access and experience both winter peak demand for heating and summer generation shortfalls due to low water inflows. As a result, households and communities are vulnerable to rolling outages, increased reliance on inefficient and polluting heating methods (such as coal burning), which worsens local air quality and urban environmental health. The initiative seeks to support innovative, scalable renewable energy technologies, like autonomous micro-hydropower systems, that can provide reliable electricity in off-grid areas, reduce dependency on centralized hydropower, and support cleaner energy alternatives that mitigate both energy insecurity and environmental impacts.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
In Kyrgyzstan, climate vulnerability affects entire communities but disproportionately impacts women, youth, and rural populations with limited access to reliable energy and economic opportunities. Women often bear the burden of household energy needs and are key decision-makers in managing water and energy resources, yet they remain underrepresented in formal climate and energy planning. Young people increasingly engage in climate advocacy and community-driven initiatives across the region. Our project intentionally involves members of these groups in pilot deployment, training on system operation, and local decision-making, empowering them with technical skills and a voice in energy resilience. By improving energy access in underserved areas, the project helps reduce the workload associated with traditional heating and fuels, supports economic participation, and strengthens community resilience. This inclusive approach contributes to broader climate engagement where women, youth, and vulnerable communities are active beneficiaries and participants in sustainable energy solutions.
