Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

ZED MOTORS empowers groups that are underrepresented in the climate movement by centering its solution on the informal transport sector, which is dominated by low-income workers who are highly exposed to climate and air pollution impacts yet rarely included in clean energy transitions. Motorcycle taxi drivers—primarily youth and working-class men—gain access to affordable electric mobility that lowers daily energy costs, stabilizes income, and reduces exposure to harmful emissions.
The project also creates new pathways for women and youth to participate in the clean mobility economy beyond driving roles, including positions in operations, technical maintenance, customer onboarding, and administration. ZED prioritizes inclusive recruitment and training, with a focus on building local technical skills and long-term employment opportunities.
ZED’s leadership and workforce reflect the communities it serves. The company is co-founded and led by African leadership, with women represented at the executive level and across partnership and impact functions. Local staff and technicians are recruited from the communities where ZED operates, ensuring that decision-making, implementation, and benefits remain rooted in climate-vulnerable urban areas.
