Project Summary / Description:

Methane Smart Soroti is an active community-based project in Soroti District, North Eastern Uganda, implemented by Ayolo Farmers and Training Consults Limited. The initiative directly mitigates methane emissions from smallholder agriculture by combining biodigester installation, improved livestock feed practices, and manure management training.
Key components include:
•	Biodigesters: Household and cooperative-scale systems convert livestock manure into biogas for cooking and organic fertilizer, preventing methane release.
•	Methane-Reducing Livestock Feed: Farmers are trained to optimize feeding practices, reducing enteric methane emissions.
•	Circular Agriculture Training: Demonstration farms and farmer hubs provide hands-on training and technical support, enabling scalable adoption.
•	Community Monitoring: Methane emissions are tracked to measure impact and refine interventions.
The project generates environmental, social, and economic benefits: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving soil fertility, lowering household energy costs, and creating income opportunities for youth and women. Funding from the Climate Curve Prize will scale ongoing activities, expand adoption, and strengthen community-based methane mitigation capacity.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

MethaneSmart Soroti is designed to empower underrepresented and climate-vulnerable communities in Soroti District, particularly women, youth, and smallholder farmers, who often lack access to climate adaptation resources and decision-making platforms. Women are actively targeted as primary beneficiaries of biodigester installations and training programs, recognizing their central role in household energy management and livestock care. Youth are engaged as biogas technicians and community trainers, providing skills, employment, and leadership opportunities in sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.

The project ensures inclusive participation by working through local farmer cooperatives, village committees, and demonstration hubs, which guarantee equitable representation in decision-making, training, and monitoring. Educational sessions and workshops are structured to prioritize women and youth, ensuring they gain technical knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills in climate-smart practices.

Within our organization, women occupy key leadership and technical roles, including the Technical Advisor on livestock feed optimization and monitoring officers, while youth staff are engaged in operations and field support.

By integrating gender, youth, and community empowerment into both implementation and organizational structure, MethaneSmart Soroti ensures that climate solutions are inclusive, equitable, and socially transformative, while building long-term capacity in groups traditionally underrepresented in the climate movement.
