Project Summary / Description:
The Volta Region Agricultural Methane Reduction Pilot implements community-based interventions in Ho, Hohoe, and Kpando to reduce methane emissions from agriculture. Activities include livestock manure management, composting of crop residues, and training farmers in climate-smart practices. The initiative engages local communities, monitors emissions, and promotes sustainable agricultural methods that enhance environmental sustainability, livelihoods, and food system resilience.
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The AgroShield Methane Mitigation Pilot actively empowers underrepresented and climate-vulnerable groups in the Volta Region, including women, youth, and rural smallholder farmers, who are often excluded from climate decision-making and access to agricultural technologies. Our approach prioritizes inclusive participation, ensuring women and youth are equally represented in training sessions, farmer groups, and project leadership committees. For example, in Hohoe and Kpando, at least 50% of participating farmers in manure management and composting workshops are women, while youth under 30 serve as community facilitators, bridging technical knowledge with local engagement. Within our organization, leadership reflects this commitment: the executive director, program coordinators, and field officers are drawn from the local community, ensuring representation of youth and women, and fostering culturally sensitive implementation. By building skills, providing access to climate-smart agricultural practices, and creating pathways for local leadership, AgroShield not only reduces methane emissions but also strengthens community resilience and economic opportunity for underrepresented groups. This dual approach ensures that the project delivers equitable climate solutions, amplifies the voices of marginalized populations, and positions vulnerable communities as active participants and leaders in the climate movement.
Mission Statement:
To enhance environmental sustainability and community resilience in the Volta Region by reducing methane emissions from agriculture, promoting climate-smart farming and livestock practices, providing practical skills training, and fostering inclusive policies that strengthen sustainable food systems.
