Clean Energy for Communities (CEC)
The initiative installs and operates anaerobic digesters that convert human, animal, and market organic waste into clean biogas for cooking and liquid biofertilizer for agriculture. By capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, the project reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves sanitation, promotes renewable energy use, and supports sustainable livelihoods in schools, institutions, informal settlements, and households across Kenya. It demonstrates a scalable circular economy model that transforms waste into energy and nutrition while empowering local communities

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Biofranca’s project empowers climate-vulnerable and underrepresented communities by prioritizing deployment in informal settlements, rural areas, and low-income households, where women, youth, and marginalized groups are most affected by poor sanitation and limited access to clean energy. Biogas digesters reduce smoke from traditional cooking fuels, improving indoor air quality—a benefit that disproportionately impacts women and children, who spend more time near cooking areas. Access to nutrient-rich digestate supports small-scale farming and food security, empowering households economically and socialy.
The initiative actively engages youth and women in technical training programs, creating local employment opportunities as digester operators, technicians, and community educators. These roles build practical skills, income opportunities, and leadership experience in a sector traditionally dominated by men.
Within Biofranca, while the leadership team is not majority female or youth-led, the organization promotes inclusive participation at the operational and community level. Women, youth, and 
other underserved groups are central to our deployment model, both as beneficiaries and as trained operators. By combining technology access, income generation, and capacity building, the project ensures that underrepresented groups are empowered to lead, maintain, and benefit from sustainable waste-to-energy solutions, amplifying their voice in the climate action space.
