A two-node circular biochar system that intercepts urban food waste (bokashi fermentation) and agricultural biomass (slow pyrolysis) to suppress methane emissions at source, producing commercially viable soil amendments. Operational nodes: Cascarón restaurant (Asunción) and Cabaña La Benigna ranch (Mbuyapey, Paraguay).

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Project Tapirus operates at the intersection of two underrepresented groups in the climate movement: informal waste workers and smallholder ranchers.
Cateura's waste workers (predominantly women and Afro-descendant and mixed-race Paraguayans from low-income periurban communities) bear the direct health burden of unmanaged organic waste decomposition. By intercepting food waste before it reaches the landfill, the project reduces the volume of decomposing matter they work in and around daily. They are not project employees, but they are direct beneficiaries.
Rural smallholder ranchers in Paraguarí Department operate outside formal carbon market access entirely. They lack the scale, technical capacity, and documentation infrastructure to participate in any existing voluntary carbon program. Project Tapirus brings a low-cost, replicable protocol directly to this context, giving ranchers access to soil amendment inputs at near-zero cost and, eventually, a pathway to carbon credit revenue that has never existed for operators of their size in Paraguay.
The founder is a Latin American practitioner from the Global South building infrastructure for Global South operators, not a Northern entity extracting credits from Southern communities.
