BioShikha Biogas is a decentralized organic waste-to-energy initiative that converts food waste, agricultural residues, and livestock manure into renewable biogas and organic fertilizer through modular anaerobic digestion systems. The initiative reduces methane emissions from unmanaged waste while supporting circular agriculture, renewable energy access, and sustainable livelihoods.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

BioShikha is designed to directly benefit climate-vulnerable rural communities that are often underrepresented in the global climate movement. In Bangladesh, smallholder farmers and rural households are highly exposed to climate risks yet have limited access to clean energy technologies and sustainable waste management solutions.

The initiative empowers these communities by providing affordable access to renewable biogas systems that reduce reliance on traditional biomass fuels. Women in particular benefit significantly because they are typically responsible for cooking and fuel collection. Clean biogas cooking reduces exposure to indoor air pollution and decreases the time spent gathering firewood.

BioShikha also creates livelihood opportunities for local technicians, waste collectors, and small entrepreneurs who participate in system installation, maintenance, and fertilizer distribution.

Within the organization, efforts are made to ensure inclusive participation in training and community engagement activities. The project actively works with rural communities and small farmers to co-develop solutions that meet local needs while contributing to climate mitigation.
