Project Summary / Description:

The Kpone Katamanso Waste-to-Energy Pilot is a project development initiative by ISAL Energy, a renewable energy subsidiary of ISAL Group Limited, targeting the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) in Greater Accra, Ghana. The initiative will develop a 30-50 tonne per day waste processing facility that diverts municipal solid waste from the Kpone Landfill — currently operating at maximum capacity — into a thermal conversion process that generates 0.5–1 MW of clean, baseload electricity for industrial users in the adjacent Tema–Kpone corridor.
Phase I, which this grant supports, funds the waste characterization and calorific analysis study across KKMA and surrounding assemblies. This study will establish, for the first time, the composition and organic fraction of Greater Accra's mixed, unsegregated municipal waste stream — data that is entirely absent today despite 19 Municipal and Metropolitan District Assemblies collectively generating thousands of tonnes of unmanaged waste daily. The study directly quantifies the methane generation potential currently being realized, unmonitored and unmitigated, at the Kpone Landfill, and provides the evidence base required to design a facility that permanently diverts this waste from landfill decomposition.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The ISAL Waste-to-Energy (WTE) pilot project is designed to empower climate-vulnerable and underrepresented communities that are disproportionately affected by poor waste management and environmental pollution. Informal waste workers—many of whom are women and youth—play a critical role in Ghana’s waste ecosystem but often operate without stable income or safe working conditions. Our project will integrate these workers into the formal value chain through structured roles in waste sorting, recycling, and material recovery within the facility, providing safer employment, training, and improved livelihoods.

The project will also prioritize local hiring from surrounding communities, particularly youth, to support plant operations, logistics, and environmental monitoring. Capacity-building programs will provide training in sustainable waste management, recycling practices, and green energy operations, equipping young people with skills relevant to the growing green economy.

At the organizational level, ISAL Group promotes inclusive participation in project development and community engagement. The project team works closely with local authorities and community stakeholders to ensure that affected communities have a voice in project planning and implementation. By formalizing informal waste activities and creating green jobs, the project contributes to inclusive climate action while empowering marginalized groups to participate meaningfully in Ghana’s transition toward a circular and low-carbon economy.
