Project Summary / Description:
The Uganda National Methane Source Attribution & MRV Framework establishes the country's first verified, source-attributed methane baseline. Recent field surveys detected unexplained methane plumes exceeding 1,000 ppm across Ugandan ecosystems, with origins remaining speculative, whether biogenic (waste, wetlands, livestock) or thermogenic (fossil fuels/combustion). Using drone-mounted Methane/Ethane sensors with integrated high-precision wind measurement and Carbon δ13C isotope analysis, this initiative resolves the attribution gap that currently renders approximately 50% of Uganda's methane emissions unactionable. The resulting data enables regulatory enforcement, carbon finance access, and targeted mitigation design.
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Community Empowerment: This project directly benefits climate-vulnerable communities across Uganda. Wetland-dependent communities (often women-headed households) gain from conservation policies informed by degradation emissions data, protecting livelihoods and ecosystem services. Livestock-keeping communities in the cattle corridor—predominantly rural and climate-vulnerable—receive verified emissions baselines enabling access to carbon finance and improved management practices. Urban poor communities adjacent to landfills benefit from methane capture projects that reduce local pollution and create green jobs. Gender Integration: Women bear disproportionate burdens from biomass cooking (indoor air pollution, fuel collection time) and wetland degradation. Our pyrogenic fingerprinting for charcoal production directly informs cleaner cooking transitions that reduce health impacts and time poverty. Field campaigns will employ female enumerators and engage women's groups in community consultations. Organizational Representation: Value Plus Enterprises Ltd is Ugandan-led and deeply rooted in local communities. Our recruitment prioritizes gender balance and youth inclusion. Technical training programs explicitly target young Ugandan professionals, building the next generation of MRV expertise. Stakeholder engagement includes women's organizations, youth groups, and community-based organizations in all consultations and validation workshops.
