Project Summary / Description:
nela waterscapes is a Kenyan-based climate-tech startup dedicated to scalable methane mitigation and sustainable agricultural wastewater management. We specialize in the design and implementation of constructed wetlands and grassroot filtration systems that transform livestock waste into high-value organic nutrients. With a proven three-year operational history, we provide a circular economy solution that reduces the environmental footprint of dairy farming while increasing farm profitability.
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
This project empowers underrepresented groups by transforming them from passive victims of climate change into active, compensated climate service providers. "underrepresented" typically refers to smallholder farmers, women, and retirees who are often excluded from high-tech carbon markets due to the small scale of their operations. 1. Empowerment through Economic Inclusion We remove the "Capital Barrier" by using a low-cost, nature-based bio-filter instead of industrial machinery. This allows a farmer with only 3–15 cows to participate in the global climate movement. By aggregating these small farms into a "Grouped Project" (e.g., via Verra), we provide these individuals a seat at the table in carbon trading, turning their methane mitigation into a tangible, liquid asset. 2. Representation in the Project In 2026, these groups are not just "beneficiaries"—they are the owners and operators: * Retirees: Represented as "Early Adopters" who provide the initial capital and community leadership to prove the system's viability. * Smallholders & Women: Represented through Dairy Cooperatives, where they hold voting power on how "Green Milk" premiums and carbon credits are reinvested into local water security and fodder banks. * Youth: Represented as trained servicemen to install and monitor the filters, creating green jobs within their own villages.
