Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Project Baridi was built in and for one of Kenya's most climate-vulnerable communities — smallholder farmers in semi-arid areas, where erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and complete absence of cold chain infrastructure make post-harvest loss not a daily reality. Women are the primary users of Project Baridi. The majority of smallholder farmers and market traders at Lamuria Market are women, many heading households on under $3 per day. The pay-per-use model of $0.15 was deliberately designed around the financial realities of women who are excluded from capital-intensive agricultural solutions. Cold storage gives women farmers the same bargaining power that aggregators and traders have always had. The technicians who maintain the cooling facility, operate daily storage intake, and teach farmers and traders about post-harvest management are young people recruited directly from Karai. Through us they gain hands-on technical skills in construction, IoT systems, and agricultural cold chain management, stable, skilled employment and a career pathway in green infrastructure through Project Baridi.
Mission Statement:
We build affordable cold storage for smallholder farmers in rural Africa with no electricity. Natural wind passing through water-soaked charcoal walls does the cooling — no power, no refrigerants. Farmers pay per crate per day. No contracts. No upfront cost. Less food wasted.
