Project Summary / Description:

The initiative is a 23-year ongoing field-based research program at ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, developing methane-neutral rice-wheat systems through integrated organic nutrient management. It enhances soil carbon sequestration, reduces net greenhouse gas emissions, improves productivity, and enables scalable, climate-resilient, and farmer-friendly solutions for sustainable agriculture.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

This project is inherently inclusive, targeting smallholder farmers, women farmers, and climate-vulnerable communities in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, where agricultural livelihoods are highly sensitive to climate variability. By promoting low-cost, locally available organic inputs, the system reduces dependency on expensive external inputs, thereby lowering production costs and improving farm profitability, which directly benefits resource-poor farmers.
Women farmers play a significant role in organic input preparation, crop management, and on-farm decision-making. The project strengthens their participation through capacity-building programs, training modules, and knowledge-sharing platforms, enhancing their technical skills and economic empowerment. The approach also builds climate resilience by improving soil health, water retention, and system stability, helping vulnerable communities better withstand droughts, erratic rainfall, and other climate stresses.
