Project Summary / Description:

The Smart Living for Markets Refuse Initiative turns Soweto Market's organic waste into a climate solution. By collecting and segregating waste for biodigestion, the initiative captures methane to produce clean biogas for cooking and organic fertilizer. Integrated sports activities promote sanitation, health, and environmental responsibility among the community. This reduces methane emissions, improves public health, creates green jobs, and offers a scalable, community-driven model for urban markets.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The Smart Living for Markets Refuse Initiative empowers underrepresented women, youth, and low-income urban communities—those most affected by poor sanitation and environmental hazards—through climate solutions.

Women market vendors, the majority at Soweto Market, gain improved sanitation, reduced disease exposure, and affordable clean energy (biogas). They also actively participate in waste segregation and decision-making via market committees.

Youth are employed in waste management and biodigester operations, creating green jobs and building circular economy skills. Sport for Social Change mobilizes them as champions of sanitation, climate awareness, and behavior change.

The initiative supports climate-vulnerable households by improving environmental conditions and providing access to cleaner energy and organic fertilizer for urban farming.

Inclusive leadership and implementation teams, with strong youth and women representation, ensure that those most affected by climate and sanitation challenges are active leaders and drivers of the solution, not just beneficiaries.
