Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Fresh Life empowers climate-vulnerable urban communities that are often underrepresented in climate solutions - particularly residents of informal settlements, women entrepreneurs, and youth. Our sanitation model operates directly within dense, low-income neighborhoods where climate impacts, environmental contamination, and inadequate infrastructure intersect. By providing safely managed sanitation services, Fresh Life improves environmental health while preventing methane emissions from unmanaged fecal sludge systems. A core component of our approach is the Fresh Life Operator network, a community-based entrepreneurship model in which local residents operate and maintain sanitation facilities. Many of these operators are women and youth who gain income opportunities, business training, and leadership roles within their communities. This model ensures that those most affected by poor sanitation and climate vulnerability are directly involved in delivering the solution. Within our organization, we prioritize local leadership and representation from the communities we serve. The majority of Fresh Life’s staff and operational leadership are based in the countries where we operate, bringing deep contextual knowledge and ensuring community-centered decision making. Through this model, Fresh Life advances both climate mitigation and social inclusion by empowering climate-vulnerable communities to participate directly in building and sustaining methane-reducing sanitation infrastructure.
