Low-Methane Transitional Grazing & Welfare Initiative for the Meanit Pastoral Community

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Our project is located in an underserved region with no water, roads, electricity, network, schools, or health infrastructure. Women there have historically been treated as property, traded for cattle, and face a lifetime of servitude. Hunger and preventable deaths are common. Our project is led by a woman (Lemlem Teklehaymanot) who experienced these conditions and is determined to change norms. We create special opportunities for girls and women through a female‑only beekeeping outgrower program that gives them independent income, reducing their vulnerability. Women are also trained as para‑vets and compost managers, gaining skills and leadership roles. Men are engaged in dialogue to shift social norms. In our organization, women hold leadership positions and make key decisions. By improving livelihoods and environmental stewardship, we empower the entire community, but we explicitly target gender equity as a core goal.

To empower pastoral communities to sustainably manage cattle in a way that enhances animal health, restores rangelands, and dramatically reduces methane emissions, without forced sedentarization.
