Project Summary / Description:

The MethaCompost Initiative is a targeted solution to reduce methane emissions from organic waste and invasive biomass in Mali. By collecting water hyacinth and agricultural residues, the initiative prevents uncontrolled anaerobic decomposition a major source of methane and converts them into high-quality compost through an aerobic process. This approach not only mitigates greenhouse gas emissions but also improves soil fertility, supports sustainable agriculture, and empowers rural communities with training and digital tools via the E-Compost platform. The initiative combines direct climate impact, measurable results, and scalable practices, creating a model for replicable waste-to-value solutions.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The MethaCompost Initiative actively empowers underrepresented groups, particularly rural communities, women, and youth, who are often excluded from climate action opportunities. By engaging local farmers especially women and young producers in compost production and sustainable waste management, the initiative provides hands-on training, technical guidance, and income-generating opportunities. This strengthens their resilience to climate change while building local leadership and capacity in climate-smart practices.
Within JAIM, underrepresented groups are well-represented in leadership and operations. Women occupy key roles in marketing, sales, and project management, while youth (under 30) drive innovation, digital engagement, and community outreach. Rural producers are integrated as active partners rather than passive beneficiaries, ensuring that decision-making and project benefits are locally grounded.
Through this approach, MethaCompost not only mitigates methane emissions but also promotes inclusive economic empowerment, strengthens local climate leadership, and amplifies the voices of those most vulnerable to climate impacts. By combining measurable environmental outcomes with social inclusion, the project demonstrates that climate solutions are most effective when they are equitable, participatory, and community-driven.
