Project Summary / Description:
The PV Module Triage project will implement a waste management process for PV modules that will provide a solution to divert them from disposal. The process consists of several steps, the first of which is collection and transport of the modules. Once the modules arrive at our facility, they are tested and triaged. The modules that are still in working order are resold as pre-owned modules, while those that have potential to produce energy safely, but have minor issues, are repaired and sold. Lastly, the modules that cannot be repaired are sent for recycling, where they are separated into various byproducts which are used as feedstocks, with the glass laminate being crushed and used for the manufacture of green interlocking pavers.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Our recycling and refurbishment activities result in reductions in GHG emissions that would otherwise be produced were the e-waste that we manage to be disposed of into landfill without the recovery of materials.
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
EWaste Africa is a BB-BEE Level 1 company, meaning that it is 100% owned by a HDI. Approximately 25% of the employees of the company are women. One of the key aims of the project is to sell the reused and repaired panels at prices substantially lower than the prices of new panels. This will make solar power a possibility for communities and individuals that previously could not afford solar and are reliant on biomass, gas and diesel for their energy generation. This project will give these communities access to solar energy, which will enable them as well as reduce carbon emissions caused by other energy generation systems.
