Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The NOAA estimates that there will be 500 weather disasters around the world per year between now and 2030. Independence Heights/Houston is in an area particularly prone to extreme weather disasters such as hurricanes and other storms, heat waves, flooding, tornadoes, and even unseasonable cold. These weather events are increasing in severity and frequency due to climate change so the Mobile Nanogrids for Emergency Response will be used often as power is shut down and access to clean water can be limited.

Specifically, Independence Heights ranks in the EPA’s 90+ percentile for environmental hazards. The Independence Heights neighborhood is above the 95th percentile on 4 indexes: particulate matter, diesel particulate matter, air toxics cancer, and superfund proximity. It is above the 90th percentile on 9 indexes: the ones named previously as well as air toxics respiratory, traffic proximity, lead paint, RMP facility proximity, and underground storage tanks. Reducing the use of fossil fuels in this frontline community can have many environmental and health benefits and break the dirty diesel cycle which contributes to climate change in the first place.
