How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
The Smart Waste, Agroforestry, and New Energy Technology (SWANET) initiative aims to address Nigeria’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. SWANET will harness carbon credits generated from afforestation, combining effective forestry management with smart agricultural practices that promote carbon sequestration to reduce GHG emissions. In 2018, Nigeria submitted its First Biennial Update Report (BUR1) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This report included a GHG inventory covering the years 2000 to 2015. It indicated that in 2015, the largest source of GHG emissions (66.9%) came from agriculture, forestry, and other land use (AFOLU), followed by the energy sector at 28.2%, waste at 3.0%, and industrial processes and product use (IPPU) at 1.9%. As of 2022, Nigeria’s annual GHG emissions were reported to be 322,336.5 ktCO2e. Building on this, our circularity engagement will result in the production of 7,082 tons of organic fertilizer, created from the conversion of 47,214.12 tons of organic waste. This effort will remove approximately 155,183.86 tons of CO2e from the atmosphere.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
SWANET’s digital platform creates a basis in which waste stream content is traded daily on its payment service bank (PSB) platform. WastePro tracks waste from cradle to grave as waste from generators is on-boarded on our platform till it’s delivered to our confirmed end-buyers in the marketplace. SWANET impacts the planet and people by providing financial inclusion for underserved youths. It provides employment and means of income for 856 college dropouts and indigent youths and women as a platform to engage in waste collection is created in low-income neighborhoods that are never provided service. The platform thus replaces the use of open dumpsites which causes environmental pollution as it has the potential of removing 568,460.01 tons of CO2 equivalent/annum from the six(6) LGA of Ibadan Municipality where the initiative shall be initially engaged in the communities. SWANET has the potential to onboard 1,093,000 subscribers in Ibadan, Nigeria, and expects its customer base to reach 39,348,000 within 10 years. With the potential to trade 4kg of waste content (plastics, paper, glass, tin/metal, and organics) at an average of N50/kg, we create the potential for the movement of 4,372,000 kg of waste an equivalent of N218.6million (US$0.336million) daily.
